The National Immigration Law Center, a non-profit focusing on resources for the Hispanic and Latino community, is urging families in Brown County to prepare for potential impacts of recent executive orders on immigration policies. The center advises families to discuss immigration status and plan for possible enforcement actions.

“Families should talk about what might happen if any family members are caught up in enforcement actions,” said Lisa Graybill, vice president for litigation and legal strategy at the National Immigration Law Center. “This means ensuring that each person who has immigration status carries evidence of that status, even copies are fine.”

The advocacy group encourages families to plan for the care of children if a parent or guardian is detained. They also suggest providing children with paper copies of important phone numbers of relatives.

Legal experts emphasize that planning is crucial and knowing your rights is essential. Constitutional protections apply regardless of citizenship status. This includes the right to remain silent and to speak to an attorney. Immigration officers must show a warrant signed by a judicial official and cannot enter private areas without one.

“If it’s a private space that the public can’t access without permission, it’s off-limits to law enforcement without a warrant,” said Graybill.

Another local non-profit, Casa Alba Melanie, issued a statement reaffirming its commitment to supporting the Hispanic/Latino community. Executive Director Amanda Garcia emphasized that the center will continue to provide resources and support without asking about immigration status.

“Our mission remains the same: to uplift our Hispanic/Latino community, encourage their well-being, and respond to community needs,” said Garcia. “We denounce any rhetoric aiming to dehumanize immigrant families and their contributions, as well as any violence towards immigrant families.”

Garcia called on community members to support all families, regardless of immigration status, country of origin, language preference, or other personal identities.

The National Immigration Law Center advises families to stay informed about immigration changes and to seek reliable information to avoid rumors and fear-mongering. “First, prepare, don’t panic, and second, make sure you’re getting your information from a reliable source,” said Graybill.
