Elon Musk’s DOGE Commission Gains Access To Sensitive Treasury Data

by Celia

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, has reportedly gained access to sensitive Treasury data, including payment systems for Social Security and Medicare, according to sources familiar with the situation. DOGE is a task force established by the Trump administration to identify ways to reduce the federal workforce, cut programs, and eliminate regulations.

The New York Times first revealed the news of DOGE’s access to these critical payment systems. The sources who spoke to The Associated Press did so on condition of anonymity, as they were not authorized to speak publicly.

Senator Ron Wyden, the highest-ranking Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, expressed concern in a letter to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. He warned that officials associated with Musk might be trying to access these payment systems to illegally withhold payments to various programs. “To put it bluntly, these payment systems simply cannot fail, and any politically motivated meddling in them risks severe damage to our country and the economy,” Wyden said.

The development comes after the resignation of Treasury’s acting Deputy Secretary, David Lebryk, who had served for over 30 years. According to The Washington Post, Lebryk resigned following a request from Musk and DOGE for access to sensitive Treasury data. In a farewell letter to Treasury employees, Lebryk emphasized the importance of the Fiscal Service’s work, though he did not mention the DOGE request.

Elon Musk responded to the resignation on his social media platform X, claiming that DOGE discovered Treasury payment approval officers were instructed to approve all payments, even to known fraudulent or terrorist groups. He did not provide evidence to support this claim.

DOGE was initially co-led by Musk and former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy. The duo pledged to cut billions from the federal budget and implement significant reductions in federal staffing.
