A coalition of immigrants’ rights organizations has filed a lawsuit against the Trump Administration over an executive order that seeks to deny US citizenship to certain babies born on American soil. The lawsuit was filed on January 23, 2025, in the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington. It argues that the order is unconstitutional, ignores congressional intent, and goes against long-standing Supreme Court rulings.
The groups behind the lawsuit include the ACLU, ACLU chapters in New Hampshire, Maine, and Massachusetts, the Asian Law Caucus, the State Democracy Defenders Fund, and the Legal Defense Fund. The plaintiffs, such as the New Hampshire Indonesian Community Support, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), and Make the Road New York, represent communities that could be directly affected by the order.
The lawsuit aims to stop the enforcement of the executive order through an immediate injunction. It challenges the administration’s attempt to redefine the constitutional protections of citizenship for children born in the United States.
