Trump Suggests He’s Above The Law With Napoleon Quote

by Celia

Donald Trump sparked alarm on Saturday after sharing a quote on Truth Social and X, seemingly suggesting that he is above the law. The quote, “He who saves his Country does not violate any Law,” was widely seen as an echo of Napoleon Bonaparte’s justification for his authoritarian rule.

The statement, which was also shared by the official White House account, came amid ongoing legal battles over Trump’s executive actions. These actions, including attempts to reduce federal funding and redefine the 14th Amendment, have been blocked by federal courts.

The quote Trump referenced is often attributed to Napoleon and is featured in the 1970 film Waterloo, where actor Rod Steiger portrays the French leader. In the film, Napoleon defends his rise to power by claiming he did not “usurp” the throne but instead took it “from the gutter” with the people’s support. The line, “He who saves a nation violates no law,” has long been associated with Napoleon’s justification for his autocratic rule.

Trump’s administration has faced a series of lawsuits and court orders challenging his policies. In response, allies of Trump, including Elon Musk, have criticized judges who have ruled against them, calling them “corrupt” and “evil.” Musk has also hinted at the possibility of impeaching judges who oppose the administration’s actions.

Legal experts and constitutional scholars have raised concerns that this rhetoric could lead to a constitutional crisis. They argue that Trump’s comments and the administration’s challenges to the judicial system are undermining the checks and balances that are central to American democracy.

During his presidency, Trump and his supporters have repeatedly claimed that he is immune from legal scrutiny, citing the 2024 Supreme Court ruling that affirmed a president’s immunity from criminal prosecution for actions tied to official duties. This ruling has further fueled Trump’s belief in his unchecked power.

Trump’s critics have condemned his comments. Jamelle Bouie of The New York Times called his latest statement “the single most un-American and anti-constitutional statement ever uttered by an American president.” Conservative commentator Bill Kristol compared the rhetoric to the authoritarian rule seen in Nazi Germany.

Elon Musk’s ongoing campaign to discredit the courts, coupled with Vice President JD Vance’s claim that “judges aren’t allowed to control the executive’s legitimate power,” has intensified fears of a constitutional crisis.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt responded to these concerns by accusing the media of “fear-mongering.” She insisted that the court orders against the administration were baseless but maintained that the administration would ultimately prevail in the legal battles.

“We will comply with these orders but it is also the administration’s position that we will ultimately be vindicated,” she stated.
