In a significant escalation of immigration enforcement, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced a new requirement for undocumented immigrants to register with the U.S. government. This move, spearheaded by DHS Secretary Kristi Noem, aims to facilitate mass self-deportations without relying on agency resources for physical removals.
Registration Requirement: Undocumented immigrants aged 14 and older must register online and provide fingerprint information. Failure to comply may result in fines or imprisonment.
Eligibility: The requirement applies to individuals without legal status, including those who have not been issued evidence of registration upon entry, such as certain Canadian visitors, and those enrolled in programs like DACA or Temporary Protected Status.
Process: A registration form and process will be available soon on the DHS website. Once registered, adults must carry evidence of registration at all times.
Consequences: Penalties will be imposed for non-compliance, though specific fines and charges are still being determined.
Statement from DHS: “If you leave now, you may have the opportunity to return and enjoy our freedom and live the American dream,” a DHS spokesperson noted. To return to the U.S. after voluntary departure, individuals will need an approved visa petition and a waiver of inadmissibility from a U.S. embassy or consulate.
