The Social Security Administration (SSA) has begun processing claims under the newly enacted Social Security Fairness Act, which eliminates the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and the Government Pension Offset (GPO). These provisions previously reduced Social Security benefits for nearly three million Americans, including public servants such as police officers, firefighters, and teachers.
The SSA has processed approximately 30,000 new claims, with some beneficiaries receiving retroactive payments. However, the agency faces challenges in implementing the law due to staffing shortages and lack of dedicated funding. Despite these hurdles, the SSA is working diligently to adjust past and future benefits for affected individuals.
The repeal of WEP and GPO is expected to significantly increase Social Security benefits for eligible recipients. Some individuals may see their monthly benefits rise by over $1,000. The SSA encourages beneficiaries to ensure their information is up-to-date to facilitate smoother payments.
While the implementation process is ongoing, lawmakers from both parties have urged the SSA to expedite the adjustments. Beneficiaries can monitor updates on the SSA’s website and manage their claims through their personal my Social Security accounts.
