A video spreading online falsely claims that President Donald Trump has raised the federal minimum wage to $25 per hour, effective April 15. If true, this would be a major change for the U.S. economy, but the claim is completely untrue.
No such increase has been approved by Congress or signed into law by the president. While some bills related to the minimum wage have been introduced, including Senator Ted Cruz’s No Tax on Tips Act, none have passed both the Senate and the House.
The White House has not issued any executive order or official action raising the federal minimum wage as of mid-April.
On January 1, 21 states raised their minimum wages, but none reached $25 per hour. Some states plan gradual increases over the coming years, but the federal minimum wage remains unchanged.
The misleading video is made to look like a breaking news report. Different versions use either a female or male voice, sometimes sounding like an AI-generated newscast.
The video claims the president signed a “historic” law to raise the minimum wage to $25, saying experts predict it will reduce poverty and benefit many industries.
It also warns of possible layoffs from some business leaders. The video shows various economic news clips, images of workers and protests, and footage of Trump, but it does not name any experts, lawmakers, or specific laws besides mentioning Trump.
This false report is designed to appear authentic but is not based on any real government action. People in Mississippi and across the country should be aware that the federal minimum wage has not changed to $25 an hour.
